The Cherokee Nation has voted to expel descendants of slaves from its midst. Apparently the great great great children of black people aren’t good enough for the Cherokee. Advocates of the move argue that the “tribal nation has a soveriegn right to decide citizenship and that other tribes base membership on blood lines.” Well sure. The whole “membership-in-the-societal-collective-is-solely-dependant-on-the-purity-of-your-blood” thing worked very well for the Nazis. Why not try it?
Not to put too fine a point on it, but are they out of their minds? Even if they have the legal right to kick the descendants of slaves out of the party does not mean its a good idea. As a public relations fiasco, this ranks right up there with Mondale’s 1984 acceptance speech.
For the record, I just worked Walter Mondale into a rant about the Cherokee Nation. How do you like them apples, Keith Oberman?
